PrimoResin Has Passed Food Safety Inspections. Yes, PrimoResin is completely inert and can be used as a food contact surface after it has been cured. PrimoResin has been thoroughly checked for leaching and migration against international requirements and has passed all of them: when used as directed, cured PrimoResin will not leach any substances into food that encounters it. Please refer to PrimoResin SDS for additional information.
PrimoResin can last approximately 6 months in opened bottles and 1 year in unopened bottles.
When used as guided, PrimoResin is considered a non-hazardous and non-toxic material; however, there are some common-sense safety measures that every user should follow:
Protect your hands by wearing gloves. Gloves can shield the user from a mess and skin irritation because epoxy resin is very sticky in its liquid form. If skin comes into contact with the substance, clean it immediately with soap and water.
If the substance comes into contact with your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water and do not rub them. Get medical help as soon as possible.
Work in an atmosphere that is well ventilated. If the ventilation is low, use a respirator.
PrimoResin epoxy resin products conform with ASTM D4236 which classifies them as classified as non-toxic when used as directed. These resin kits are made from highest-quality materials and do not emit any VOCs or fumes.
Primo Resin contains both UV stabilizers and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) which prevents the yellowing process from starting in the first place. Therefore, the epoxy remains crystal clear once the curing process is completed.
Since UV light causes yellowing and other degradative effects in epoxy resins, stabilisation additives are used to mitigate the harm. A UV stabiliser acts to prevent gloss loss, cracking and de-lamination, as well as yellowing to some degree. A UV stabiliser only delays the yellowing of resins, therefore PrimoResin includes a HALS (hindered amine light stabiliser) for maximum performance.
Utilize the Primo Resin calculator to determine how much product is required for your project. The quantity required may differ based on the product selected.
Color pigments such as mica powders, liquid dye and alcohol ink can me used to tint Primo Resin. To get an all-over saturated color, simply drop color into the mixture when stirring. The Primo Resin color pigments have been designed to work with Primo Resin epoxy resin, preserving the glossiness and translucency of the resin while posing no flammability danger when torched.
TIP: 6% color pigment of the overall amount of resin and hardener mixture.
If you use more than 6% colourant, you risk disrupting the delicate balance needed for the epoxy resin's chemical reaction, preventing your PrimoResin from curing properly.
The mean temperature that cured PrimoResin can withstand is 120 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius). At those temperatures, the cured parts can become a little flexible, but they will harden up again once they cool. Typically, if you place a hot item right out of the oven on a resin surface or if you leave in on a resin surface for a long period of time, it could cause permanent damage.
Torches are excellent for removing bubbles because they create a flame that is easy to control and guide at a bubble-filled environment. The resin thins out when heated, making it easier to de-gas. Heat guns can also be used, but they are more difficult to guide to the desired location. The flame would also burn off any small dust particles that may have accumulated.
After the curing process has started, bubbles will continue to form for up to 60 minutes. Running an Artist's Torch over the surface of your resin is the perfect way to get rid of them. You can also blow on the surface or use a toothpick to pop the bubbles, but the Artist's Torch is by far the most powerful and successful process.
Each PrimoResin kit contains a user manual which provides basic instructions such as measuring, mixing, applying, and curing time.
Step 1: MEASURE
Pour in a measuring cup the resin (Part A) and hardener (Part B) based on the proper mixing ratio. Make sure to wear gloves to avoid skin irritation. Ex : (ratio 1:1) 100ml (Part A) for 100ml (Part B) Ex : (ratio 2:1) 200ml (Part A) for 100ml (Part B)
Step 2: MIX
Stir the mixture thoroughly for 3-4minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container while stirring to avoid unmixed resin or hardener to stick. Unmixed material may result in soft spots after curing.
Step 3: POUR
Pour the epoxy resin mixture on the surface or inside the mold cavity. Make sure the project is leveled to maintain an even thickness. Pass a heat gun rapidly above the work surface to extract excess air bubbles. Make sure surface is free of oil, grease, or dust to avoid contamination.
Step 4: LET IT DRY
Let the mixture dry as recommended. Protect the mold cavity from dust, residue, or water by placing a protective film above it. Ratio 1:1 – 24hrs Ratio 2:1 – 72hrs
Primo Resin epoxy resin emits no fumes or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but it is best to use it in a well-ventilated region. It should be stored and used at room temperature in a non-humid atmosphere to avoid surface film and other imperfections in the resin as it cures.
Make sure the surface is dust-free and dry. Make sure the piece is levelled. A drop cloth should be placed underneath your work area. Help your piece with support blocks so you can quickly resin the edges. You would also want to tape off the underside of your piece to keep it safe from spills.
Primo Resin epoxy resin is auto leveling, to be sure. This ensures that as long as you have a level surface, you can leave it alone and it will spread itself out uniformly. To direct the resin into place, you'll probably want to spread it around with a brush or a reusable spreader.
Primo Resin epoxy resin has a 45-minute operating period (also known as the pot life or open time). This is the time limit for working with the resin until it starts curing and becomes too stiff to handle. It's safer to use the resin right away after it's been thoroughly mixed for 3-4 minutes.
Heat will shorten the working time: whether you place the resin in a warm water bath or work in a warm atmosphere, the working time will be reduced by around 10-15 minutes. It's even possible to shorten the cure time.
The amount of time it takes for the resin mixture to complete its chemical reaction and reach its hardest state is referred to as cure time. The solid state for Primo Resin epoxy resin will be reached after 24 hours, the surface can be touched 8hours after application without feeling sticky. It takes 7 days for it to fully heal.
Cover your resine item with a protective coating (e.g. a big cardboard/ plastic box). It is a good idea to have the cover ready before you start resining so you can use it right away. Dampen the floor to keep dust at bay if working in a garage.
You should wait until the first coat of resin has reached a gel-like state, which should take around 3-5 hours, before pouring the second coating on top of the first. The two layers will adhere to one another. Wait until the first coat is dried to the touch, about 24 hours later, and then scuff up the surface with 80 grit sandpaper before adding the second coat. This is going to be a lot of fun.
Primo Resin epoxy resin can be thinned by increasing its viscosity by heating it. This will hasten the healing process. If it's in a glass tub, you can heat it by putting it near a heater or in a hot water bath. Plastics have a tendency to breathe, putting the resin at risk of absorbing water and being cloudy. Do not attempt to thin with solvents.
Mix the mixture for at least 3-4 minutes to ensure that all is thoroughly mixed. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container as you stir. Resin that has been improperly mixed will be unable to catalyse and will not cure properly. If there is some unmixed resin or hardener, it will be on the sides and bottom. Unmixed product may cause soft spots, sticky spots in your project.
Keep clean-up easy by wearing disposable gloves, lining your work surface with a vinyl shower curtain, and placing drop sheets on the ground. Do not flush any excess epoxy resin down the toilet! Instead, use a paper towel to wipe off all containers and reusable plastic tools. To clear any remaining residue, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol or acetone once more. If needed, wash with hot soapy water.
It is easy to keep Primo Resin epoxy resin parts clean: just treat them like glass. Polish with a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner, as if it were glass.
After the first layer has dried, simply add another layer of Primo Resin epoxy resin on top. To avoid making the same thing happen twice, make sure your piece is perfectly level. Sand in between the layers to ensure that they are properly adhered to one another. The second coat will be transparent and will go over the first.
When you add the second coat, the scratchy, scuffed look of the first coating will be gone.
The optimal working temperature for Primo Resin is 72-77F (23-25C). Resin that is colder than this is dense, clumpy, difficult to deal with, and appears milky due to thousands of microbubbles (which you will never be able to torch out). This problem can be greatly alleviated by gently warming the unopened resin/hardener bottles in a warm water bath for around 10 minutes. Warming your resin in water reduces your working time by around 10-15 minutes, so keep that in mind when planning your time. After withdrawing the bottles from the waterbath, thoroughly dry them; even a single drop of water in the mixture will cause it to become cloudy and prevent it from curing properly.
When the resin and hardener are mixed, a chemical reaction occurs, which starts the curing process. This chemical reaction produces heat, which is perfectly natural. With more resin in the mixture, the heat production increases. Primo Resin epoxy resin is designed to resist thermal energy-induced yellowing (heat).
Except for wax paper and plastics containing silicone, Primo Resin epoxy resin bonds well to any medium (i.e. materials that repel water). It's great for wood, photos, inkjet prints, acrylic, fully dry oil paint, watercolor, spray paint, encaustic, ink, paper collage, oil pastel, sculpture, roses, rocks, and other found items.
You can spread Primo Resin epoxy resin with a paint roller, but the roller would be unusable afterward. When using latex, an air gun is not advised because it can clog the passageway as it heals. The best way to add Primo Resin epoxy is to use a Primo Resin spreader to drag the resin over the board.
While you don't need to use a sealant before adding Primo Resin in most circumstances, sealing over paper that can absorb the resin, sealing over loose materials that may float away in the resin, and sealing over natural items that may off-gas, such as wood, are all circumstances where sealing first makes sense.
Transfer your resin to a warmer location and will resume regular operation until it reaches room temperature.
With Primo Resin epoxy resin, there would be no shrinkage. Shrinkage happens only in materials that contain solvents, inexpensive fillers, or non-reactive diluents, none of which are present in Primo Resin epoxy resin.
Primo Resin epoxy resin cures to a firm, rough surface that is heat and scratch resistant.
No, cracking is not a common occurrence. When dried, Primo Resin epoxy resin is very strong and long-lasting. To resist cracking and brittleness, it has been formulated with some versatility.
Yes, Primo Resin epoxy resin is a permanent application that seals in anything it is poured overtop of while still protecting the job under it from spray.
While the advanced UV and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers in Primo Resin epoxy resin shield it from deterioration (i.e. yellowing) caused by UV light, intentionally exposing it to UV light is still not advised.
